Roles of Granular Sludge Size Restricting and Organic Degradation in an Extended Filamentous AGS System Using Agnail Aeration Device

This work investigated the role of an agnail device (manually made from a comb) on sludge size restriction and organic degradation in extended filamentous aerobic granular sludge-sequencing batch reactors (AGS-SBRs) with artificial wastewater. Two identical SBRs (R1 R2) were employed this experiment. Extended AGS large was achieved both by seeding dewatering day 40. R1 (the control) did not use aeration device, system finally disintegrated. However, R2 promptly days 56–59, obviously decreased 4.8 mm to 2.5 mm, dominant species, including Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Choroflexi, gradually shrank at low level, acting as framework for recovery. because enough nutrients diffused into inside small living. Simultaneously, volume indexes (SVI5 SVI30) sharply 155.8–103.9 51.7–46.6 mL/g, mixed liquid suspended solids (MLSSs) extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs) increased kept 5816 mg/L 69.1 mg/g·MLVSS, respectively. These contributed enhancing sludge’s structural stability avoid failure. COD NH4+-N degraded simultaneous nitrification denitrification (SND) processes throughout experiment, which significantly influenced before or after employed. results indicate that can effectively restrict limit overgrowth nutrient diffusion interior, prevent disintegration. In addition, had no significant influence degradation.
